XBMC Media Center is like the Windows Media Center. The program is able to manage all types of media files; video, audio, and images. We may add paths of our media files of different categories to access them easily. The program is available free of cost.
The program's interface is very simple and easy to use. Almost all of the video files are supported, even FLV and MKV can be played without any problems. FLV files aren’t supported on many players, even the so called “FLVPlayer” cannot do fast forward as easily as this program can. MKV HD files, which are slow in most of the players, can be played easily as well. It can also play the VOB files copied from a DVD.
Scripts and plug-ins can be used to add a lot of cool features. It comes with a script to view “Apple Movie Trailers” from the Internet. More scripts are available just through a Google search. Most of them can be used to browse online video/audio or radio sources. The online features also include weather reports. It can also install updates and add-ons automatically.
Like Windows Media Center, the program is poorly optimized. Using other programs at the same time is not a good idea. Well, this is a Media Center program, right? Who would be working on the computer while watching a movie?
I would recommend the program for those using Windows XP and Windows Vista as an alternative for Media Center or any DVD Player.
- Supports hardware video decoding of various video cards.
- Open Source.
